The son of coal miner Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera, Steve Harvey was born Broderick Stephen Harvey in Welch, West Virginia. His first name, Broderick, is a tribute to Highway Patrol actor Broderick Crawford.
Harvey has experience working as a carpet cleaner, letter carrier, auto mechanic, boxer, and insurance salesman. He performed his first stand-up routine at Cleveland’s Hilarities Comedy Club on October 8, 1985. In the late 1980s, Harvey lived on the streets for three years.
