Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on December 25, 1946, and spent most of his boyhood in Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama. He was the son of Mary Lorraine Buffett, who died on September 25, 2003, and James Delaney Buffett, Jr., who died on May 1, 2003, both of whom worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Laurie, born in 1948, and Lucy, born in 1953, are his two younger siblings.

His grandfather, James Delaney Buffett, was a steamship captain from Newfoundland, and his father was a maritime engineer and sailor; these experiences inspired his music later in life.

Buffett went to St. Ignatius School and played trombone in the school band. In 1964, he graduated from McGill Institute.
