Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on December 25, 1946. He also spent time growing up in Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama. He was the son of US Army Corps of Engineers employees Mary Lorraine Buffett, who passed away on September 25, 2003, and James Delaney Buffett, Jr., who passed away on May 1. His two younger siblings are Lucy, born in 1953, and Laurie, born in 1948.

His grandfather, James Delaney Buffett, was a steamship captain from Newfoundland, and his father was a marine engineer and sailor, thus he was exposed to sailing as a young age. These experiences later inspired his music.

Buffett played the trombone in the school band while he was a student at St. Ignatius School. In 1964, he earned his degree from McGill Institute.

Boaters of a particular age are likely to have a few Jimmy Buffett tunes on their iPods. While you may be familiar with his lyrics about his laid-back lifestyle, this famous “Son of Son of a Sailor” has long been a “real boater.”

Buffett, an experienced sailor, was looking for his next boat when he found himself at the door of designer Ted Fontaine. The Surfari 50, a sleek yet subtle, high-tech sailboat built by Pacific Seacraft in North Carolina, is the product of their encounter.
