He began boxing at the age of 22, after injuries restricted his interest in track and field athletics, and joined Earlsfield ABC in Earlsfield, London. Joyce has been quoted as saying, ‘I don’t really like boxing, but I enjoy doing it,’ emphasizing that he was not a huge boxing fan growing up and only started watching some of the greats after getting into boxing properly.
