Goodyear’s parents, George and Alice Kemp, who divorced when he was six years old, welcomed him into the world on March 29, 1942, in Bury, Lancashire.

She was aware of William Goodyear as her father and that her mother had remarried. Elizabeth Duckworth, Goodyear’s grandmother, who drowned at the age of thirteen, raised her. She attended St. Anne’s Academy in Middleton.

On ITV1’s Coronation Street, Goodyear played the bartender Bet Lynch, for which she is most known. In 1966, she took on the part for a short time before leaving when Pat Phoenix, a senior cast member, pushed her to pursue more education.
