Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on December 25, 1946, and spent most of his boyhood in Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama. He was the son of Mary Lorraine Buffett, who died on September 25, 2003, and James Delaney Buffett, Jr., who died on May 1, 2003, both of whom worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Laurie, born in 1948, and Lucy, born in 1953, are his two younger siblings.

His grandfather, James Delaney Buffett, was a steamship captain from Newfoundland, and his father was a maritime engineer and sailor; these experiences inspired his music later in life.

Buffett went to St. Ignatius School and played trombone in the school band. In 1964, he graduated from McGill Institute.

Buffett said on his website in September 2022 that he “needed to refrain from touring for the rest of the year,” citing “health issues and brief hospitalization,” which caused him to cancel October gigs in Salt Lake City and Nampa, Idaho, and postpone shows in Las Vegas to March 2023.
