Over the course of his career, Bowie made appearances in more than 30 movies, television shows, and stage productions. He previously compared his film career to “splashing in the kids’ pool” and said that his acting career was “productively selective,” prioritizing cameos and supporting roles above lead roles.

From July 1980 to January 1981, Bowie appeared without theatrical makeup as Joseph Merrick in the Broadway production of The Elephant Man and won critical acclaim.

In Mr. Rice’s Secret, Bowie portrayed the neighbor of a 12-year-old boy who was near death. Bowie portrayed himself as the judge in a “walk-off” between competing male models in Ben Stiller’s comedy Zoolander from 2001, as well as in Eric Idle’s mockumentary The Rutles 2: Can’t Buy Me Lunch from 2002.
