Gauff was born in Delray Beach, Florida, to Candi and Corey Gauff. Her younger brothers are two years her junior. Her father was a college basketball player at Georgia State University before becoming a healthcare executive.

Her mother was a Florida State University track and field athlete who also taught. Gauff’s parents put up their occupations to focus on their daughter’s education.

Her father eventually took over as her primary coach, while her mother monitored her homeschooling. Growing up, her father had little experience playing tennis. Gauff began training at the Mouratoglou Academy in France at the age of ten, under the tutelage of Serena Williams’ longtime coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Qatar Total Open after defeating two-time champion Petra Kvitová in the second round.

Gauff won her first major singles victory on September 9, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in three sets and becoming the first American teenager to do so since Serena Williams in 1999.
